Mindfulness is something of a buzzword in society these days, with more people becoming self‒aware of their mental health than ever before. This shift has undoubtedly had an impact in many parts of our lives, but, for all the talk about mindfulness and how it can impact our lives, what impact can it have on our relationships?
We teamed up with our favourite life coach Carole Ann Rice to share her 5 ways mindfulness can benefit your relationship:
1. Think before you react
Arguing is a natural part of any relationship and it can sometimes lead to irrational responses and lashing out. But, in order to make sure that you don’t do something you regret, you need to take time to consider a reasonable response and don’t charge in. Think about the consequences of your actions and that will ensure a happier relationship.
2. Be considerate
Sometimes people have different opinions on things and that’s OK. Variety is the spice of life and it’s important that you are considerate of other people’s emotions and feelings. Just because you don’t agree with them or think that they’re being difficult, you don’t have to buy into it and react to them.
3. Don’t rush
With social media expectations, it can be difficult not to expect your relationship to be perfect all the time. But, rather than worrying about how you appear or what will happen two years down the line, live in the now and enjoy things at their own pace. Slow and steady wins the race, so take time to get to know each other and enjoy being together.
4. Be independent
While being in a relationship is meant to be a fantastic and loving experience, it’s also important that you have your own life and take some time to yourself every now and then. If you are in a relationship. try to ensure that you have your own hobbies and focus on growing on yourself, not just your partner.
5. Enjoy the small things
The small things in life are often the best and it’s important that you focus on the little things that make your relationship so great! Going for a country walk, listening to your favourite tunes together or heading out for a nice meal are all great ways to spend quality time together in each other’s company. Put the phone down and enjoy being with one another. Not everything has to be grand and elaborate.
