The hit Netflix series The Gentlemen is inspiring a new wave of British-influenced fashion centred around the old-money quintessentially British look.
Since the premiere and speculation of a second series, attention has turned towards the show’s sense of style, with searches for ‘Theo James style’ up 101% in the past month, as fans search for ways to adopt the show’s aesthetic themselves.
Searches for Old Money style & outfits are up 235% YoY, and British retailer Joules has reported that tweed searches on their site have increased by 29% since the start of the year with tweed now being the 7th most searched term on the entire Joules site.
With this in mind, Joules’ Heads of Design and Creative have teamed up to deliver the best tips for getting the Old Money look and achieving The Gentlemen aesthetic.

“The Old Money aesthetic has a very elegant timeless feel, with a preppy undertone, so grounding your style in classic neutral colours such as tan, white, and navy blue is key, as it’s Spring, adding fresh pops of colour, including accessories, will transition your wardrobe into the new season.”
The aesthetic is synonymous with the British countryside, and embracing all things country living. Think tweed jackets, wool cardigans and stripes. A classic look that never goes out of style.
With this trend taking off, Joules’ Head of Design and Creative have teamed up to deliver the best tips for country style with a contemporary twist. Joules’ SS24 collection has been described as “preppy with a traditional English edge” making it the perfect collection to draw inspiration from when looking to nail the Old Money look.
Lucy Lawrance, Head of Design at Joules, has explained just what the Old Money aesthetic is and how you can make the style work this spring so that you can achieve the effortless country chic look set to take centre stage in 2024.
“The Old Money aesthetic has a very elegant timeless feel, with a preppy undertone, so grounding your style in classic neutral colours such as tan, white, and navy blue is key, as it’s Spring adding fresh pops of colour, including accessories, will transition your wardrobe into the new season.
Lucy has also provided some advice as to what staples you need to channel the look into your everyday wardrobe,
“Classic stripes, shirting, knits (including cabling), blazers, trench and tweed are a must. We have seen a surge in interest for the latter with tweed now being the 7th most searched term on the entire Joules site.
“Other things to consider are quality fabrics, premium yarns and attention to detail, alongside a neater silhouette (not everything should be oversized). These all emulate elegance in a sophisticated way.”
Alice Joule, Head of Creative at Joules, has also shared her advice on how to weave the Old Money style into your wardrobe this season.
“The Old Money aesthetic is all about clean lines and using preppy classic pieces to achieve the appearance of timeless elegance.
“To achieve it, I would opt for a cotton cardigan paired with either Chinos or white skinny jeans. Adding a trench together with a beautiful silk scarf will really help finish off the look.
“For a more collegiate take on old money style, I would pair a jersey blazer with an amazing striped shirt – super preppy and definitely playing into the old money aesthetic.
