5 Awesome Networking Tips For Beginners

Have you ever had your heart sink and your stomach churn as you approach a networking event, hearing the roar of conversations and business chitchat? The worrying thoughts of: What if nobody wants to connect with me? What if I don’t know what to say? What if I make a social gaff/get rejected/have everyone point, laugh or throw bread rolls at me?

Mama Got This is an all-female collective for like-minded business owners; a community of ladies who support each other, empower each other, and celebrate every woman’s success. Founded by Fran and Abi, two ladies who know all about the pressures and rewards of being self-employed working mums, Mama Got This organises a number of monthly meetups and bi-monthly women-only events, plus a private member’s community, and an accountability programme.

Today, the two founders are sharing some of their top tips for your next networking event…!

1. Go with an open mind

Every group is different, so just because one group doesn’t feel quite right doesn’t mean none of them will. Don’t write networking off completely. Keep testing until you find your tribe.

2. Be yourself

Our uniqueness is your superpower, so don’t be afraid to be yourself. No one else has your experience, knowledge or skillset, so be proud about what you have to offer others.

3. Give

Give advice and knowledge with no expectation of anything in return – saving yourself from disappointment. You never know what connections this meeting could lead to if you keep an open mind and don’t pressure others into making a commitment.

4. Build genuine, personal connections

Networking isn’t all about work. Who knows, you might meet some friends, too! Don’t go in with a mindset that’s only interested in work-related things. People depend on real, genuine connections in life – and you should too.

5. Be vulnerable

Don’t be scared to be vulnerable. If you’ve found the right group, use them to help you through the tough times, but also celebrate the exciting wins. There’s nothing better than having people who care about you supporting your business from a place of complete understanding.
