The Latest Nail Trend: Textured Nail Finishes

The latest nail trend featuring textured nail finishes are not just easy, but also extremely fast to achieve right at home!

Do you spend your day staring at amazing nail art images on nail blogs or Pinterest wishing that you could do something just as spectacular?

I totally wish I could draw really cool swirly flowers on my nails, but not only do I not have the skills to pull off amazing nail art, I also lack the patience. My manicures are smudged within minutes because I simply cannot wait around for it to dry. Imagine having to wait for a base color to dry before adding layers upon layers of intricate designs! I would rather go to the dentist for a root canal – at least the dentist gives you Novocain but you can still text (or tweet)!

Luckily there’s a new nail trend in town – textured nail finishes! Creating a textured-looking nails is completely simple and fast with almost zero drying time involved! Read on for more:

The Crushed Velvet Manicure

Matte textured nails came into the scene during Fall 2012 Runway shows, with McQueen, Balmain, and Gucci showing velvet coated nails. Nail bloggers picked up on the slightly fuzzy textured nail and it became a new nail art trend. Ciaté, who previously came out with the Caviar Manicure Manicure Kit, created a new nifty Crushed Velvet Manicure Kit (£14 at Selfridges) containing a thick, chip-resistant nail polish, a dusting brush, and crushed velvet in three Fall-appropriate hues:  Mink Cashmere, Berry Poncho and Blue Suede.

Bloggers who have tried it were impressed with the kit and the value. “I was really impressed with the Crushed Velvet Kit [by Ciaté],” said Kristine Ayala of Beauty in NYC. “[It is] easy to use and looked gorg (sic) when finished. Good value also.”

There is however, a slight drawback in how messy the crushed velvet gets. “I really wanted to love the Ciaté Velvet Manicure,” said Danielle Gray of The Style and Beauty Doctor. “But after the mess it made and how much of the velvet you have to shake out to get it on your nails, I wound up with something that kinda looked like I fell asleep before my nails dried.”

But it still was not a complete disappointment for Gray as she explained that “The actual nail polish itself is awesome though—very little chipping in four days.”

The Faux-Suede Manicure Using Matte Topcoats

Textured nails finishes were again spotted in Spring/Summer 2013 shows. While backstage at the Richard Chai show, I spied the manicurists were applying a shimmer shade with specks of glitter but final nails were far from sparkly! Turns out the manicurists were applying a clear matte coat on top of the shimmer polish for a subdued faux-suede nail. The glitter specks underneath gave the nails that faux-suede texture while adding dimension

Get the look by applying the Matte Finish Shine Free Topcoat by butter LONDON (£15 on butterlondon.com) on top of any shimmery or glittery polish you currently own. This top coat is extremely fast-drying, meaning you can start typing or texting within minutes. Wear it on top of sheer shimmery polishes or on top of heavy chunky glitter polishes – it’s up to you!
