The Key Bag Trends to Invest in This Season

As we are all well aware, the world of fashion is constantly evolving and adapting, meaning there are always new and exciting trends to try, particularly when it comes to accessories. Fashion trends always have a way of resurfacing, even when you think they were long forgotten, so when it comes to new seasonal trends it’s often hard to determine whether a new bag trend is worth investing in.

So which styles should you be shopping for this A/W? With frugality becoming even more fashionable, the expert MyBag team along with the help of Google Trends and WGSN reporting, have analysed search data to see which trends are worth investing in and predict how we will be accessorising for A/W23 to provide you with the ultimate style inspiration for your wardrobe refresh.

1. The shoulder bag

With the return of Y2k style in the past few years the shoulder bag was rocketed back to the spotlight and has cemented itself on the shoulders of fashion lovers! The shoulder bag remains a must, thanks to its versatile nature. It is the most fail-safe investment to make this Autumn/Winter. Sculptural and novelty shapes, such as half-moons, crescent and baguette styles and elongated straps has helped give the shoulder bag a more sophisticated and commercial update for the A/W23 season.

The Autumn/Winter 2023 runway saw a lot of magpie styling, with sparkly handbags that resembled disco balls taken out for a spin by the models at Balmain. “With the prominent Y2k trend, it’s only natural to see silver metallic not far behind. Making a statement on SS23 runways, this has now carried through into a lot of AW23 collections due to the continued high demand. With brands such as Vivienne Westwood, Diesel, Coach and Marc Jacobs all feature metallic range” Kirstyn McIntyre, MyBag Buyer.

Speaking of metallics, a shoulder bag worth investing in for Autumn/Winter 2023, is Diesel’s 1Dr Leather Shoulder Bag, a favourite among celebrities including Kylie Jenner, Miley Cyrus and Megan Thee Stallion. “A bag trend that isn’t going anywhere is the 1Dr bag from Diesel – it comes in a variety of sizes and colour so perfect for any occasion, it’s the IT bag of the season,” Kirstyn McIntyre, MyBag Buyer.

If sparkles aren’t your thing, then maybe you are seeing red? Red was all over the runway for Autumn/Winter 2023 with designers unveiled a plethora of fiery red bags from shoulder bags to slouchy clutches to crossbody styles. If you’re looking to invest in the trend and nail two trends in one, a vibrantly red shoulder bag is the perfect way to go.

2. The Bucket Bag

After seeing a 7% decline in searches between AW21 and 22, Bucket Bags have made a stylish comeback for the Autumn/Winter 2023 season due to their ability to strike the perfect balance between fashion and functionality. In the Autumn/Winter 2023 runways, designers presented modernised and innovative versions of bucket bags, breathing new life into this classic silhouette. We saw creative adaptations, such as oversized bucket bags with exaggerated proportions, bold colour blocking and sculptural silhouettes, injecting a sense of playfulness and statement-making impact. This has helped to solidify bucket bags as a must-have investment accessory for the season.

Statement accessories are a year-round trend, but AW23 sees a rainbow of colours. There are pops of orange, yellow, green, blue and so on to lift any outfit and brighten anyone’s day. This can be seen in the Marc Jacobs bucket bags but also brands like Shrimps, Coach, Kate Spade, Pinko, Stine Goya all have bucket bags worth investing in.”

3. The clutch

The clutch bag has seen a decline in popularity and searches in the past few years (Google Trends). The need for carrying more items and the preference for hands-free options led to the overshadowing of the clutch, alongside the huge popularity in trends, such as Y2k, has left the classic clutch bag behind and with a slightly outdated feeling. Nevertheless, the clutch bag is back, and featuring in major shows during the Autumn/Winter 2023 runways, proving that fashion trends can always come back around.

The clutch bag that we are seeing this season, however, is a far cry from the classic skinny bag that can only hold a sole lipstick that you may picture when you think of the clutch. The clutch bag has undergone a reimagination for the Autumn/Winter 2023 season, making it a trend that shoppers should invest in. From oversized envelope clutches to sculptural silhouettes and statement fringing and florals, the clutch bag has been transformed into a statement piece that effortlessly merges fashion and functionality.

This trend has already reached the celeb sphere, with the clutch seen under the arms of likes of Kendall Jenner, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Rihanna. The clutch bag’s renewed popularity showcases its ability to be a fashionable statement piece, offering a refined and elegant accessory option for the AW/23 season.
