Why Princess Diana’s Go-To Style is IN this Party Season

Having binged The Crown Season 5, one thing we’re certain of is that Princess Diana has inspired our festive season look. Hello #powerdressing with a pop of gold jewellery.

With this in mind, Megan Watkins, SilkFred’s Head Stylist shares her expert opinion on Princess Diana’s most notable looks from The Crown Season 5:

1. Power dressing: blazers and skirts

“Most notably, the most consistent style trend of Princess Diana’s worn through season 5 is power dressing, which Diana became an iconic representation of in the 90s through her many blazer and skirt combos which were certainly a bold and trendy look in comparison to the usual royal fashion at the time.”

“Today, power dressing is still very much on-trend, although mini-skirts and trousers are favoured over midi skirts, but you can expect to see bold blazer suits galore this party season.”

2. The revenge dress

“Undoubtedly, one of the most iconic scenes from season 5 is the recreation of when Princess diana stepped out in a slinky cocktail dress the same night a documentary aired in which Prince Charles confessed to his affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles, forever cementing this look as the ‘revenge dress’.”

“The original dress was a black off-the-shoulder Christina Stambolian gown, which is a classic take on the little black dress and a silhouette which we see return every party season in one way or another.”

Claire Beatson, General Manager of lab grown engagement ring brand, Nightingale, shares her expert opinion on the Princess’ key jewellery pieces from The Crown Season 5:

1. Gold hoops

“Whilst Princess Diana wore many a tiara in her time, season 5 of The Crown very much focuses on presenting her as an ‘outsider’ amongst the royal family and so we do not see her dripping in regal jewels. Instead, we are shown a more casual style of Princess Diana’s, with close-up shots revealing a pair of yellow gold hoops which are worn throughout the entire season.”

“Gold hoops such as these are considered a staple in current jewellery fashion, and is something we’ll be seeing a lot of this party season.”

2. Sapphire and pearl choker necklace

“We can’t not mention the ‘revenge dress’ scene in episode 5, which recreates the infamous outfit featuring a slinky black dress and a beautiful royal heirloom. Princess Di wears an 65ct Oval Sapphire set in a double halo of diamonds that had once been the Queen Mother’s brooch and features nearly 8cts of diamonds alone.”

“It was added to a seven string pearl choker for Princess Diana by the royal jeweller Garrards and has become an iconic piece. This necklace could easily fetch £1million if sold at auction today.”
