Make School Mornings Easier – Tips for a Smoother Start

September 7, 2025

Getting your child ready for school can feel like a marathon! We all know that school mornings can be rushed and chaotic if not done right but you’re not alone. Making sure your child is ready for school is at the top on the agenda of many parents. With so much to do from packing bags to getting breakfast ready and sorting the packed lunch, a little prep really goes a long way. So take it one step at a time—create checklists, set morning routines, and make it fun.

Here are some tips for making school mornings less stressful:

Prep the Night Before

As parents, we’re all aware that time can be short so prepping for the school days the night before goes a long way.

  • Lay out clothes (including socks and shoes) for the next day.
  • Pack schoolbags: Write a weekly checklist, and keep it somewhere visible, for bags and uniform so there’s no confusion. Monday – PE, Tuesday – Swimming, etc.
  • Make lunches or prep lunchbox items ahead of time—store in the fridge overnight.
  • Do a quick “tomorrow check” together before bedtime.

Some parents also go even further than this, doing most their prep work for the (entire) coming week on Sunday.

Create a visual board

Draw a visual chart of your morning so your children know what’s coming next. This is perfect for little ones who can’t read yet. It gives them the opportunity to be independent and you might find they are more motivated to finish each task and complete the list!

Lay the table

I often put bowls, spoons and cereal on the table before I go to bed. It means children can sit down and start breakfast while you make anything warm or get yogurts out of the fridge etc.

Wake Earlier

Set your alarm half an hour before your children wake. Enjoy a morning shower without feeling rushed! If you are semi ready yourself, the morning will be much easier as you can concentrate on getting little ones dressed and ready.

Spare Toothbrush

Keep a toothbrush and toothpaste in the downstairs loo so you don’t have to go back upstairs to clean teeth after breakfast.

No routine is perfect, and it’s okay to have off days. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s progress. Each small adjustment can make a big difference! Remember there is an entire school category on the Louenna app to help you.
