Gen Z’s Love of ‘Hoa Hoa Hoa’ Lighting is Sparking Wellbeing Warnings
There’s a TikTok video going viral right now from GetCareers, showing the hilarious difference between Millennials and Gen Z in the workplace, garnering over 8.5 million views. Millennials were shown working under bright lights, while Gen Z were shown under moody, low-lit lighting. This type of lighting is now dubbed as “hoa hoa hoa” lighting, which is about creating a calm, cosy atmosphere – think warm, moody lamps.

However, beyond the light-hearted nature of the video, proper lighting plays a crucial role in any work environment. Ben Wright, Global Head of Partnerships at Instant Offices says “improper lighting can lead to eye strain, headaches, fatigue, and poor concentration over time. Unfortunately, poor lighting in workplaces isn’t uncommon. In fact, 68% of employees report being dissatisfied with the lighting in their workplace, according to the American Society of Interior Design. Poor lighting can also pose serious safety risks, increasing the likelihood of accidents, trips, and other workplace injuries.”

“On the other hand, a well-light environment can make a world of difference. According to PMC, proper lighting can also improve overall wellbeing, boost mood and improve mental clarity – making it an essential part of a productive workspace.”
The team also used AI to generate an image illustrating the effects of poor lighting, based on the identified negative impacts.
In the viral TikTok’s, the lighting was intentionally made to create that dark, moody setting. However, if your office suffers from poor lighting, there are several things you can do before arranging for professional installation or even finding a new workspace with better lighting systems. Here are a few quick fixes to support your colleagues in the meantime:
- Add temporary lighting fixtures: Use floor lamps or desk lamps to provide extra light where it’s needed most.
- Rearrange your workspace for natural light: If possible, move desks or workstations closer to windows to take advantage of daylight. This might be more challenging during the darker months or if your office has assigned seating, but if flexibility allows, use the spaces with the best natural light.
- Encourage regular breaks: Remind colleagues to step away from their screens and go outside for short walks. This not only reduces eye strain but also helps boost mood and energy levels.
