Weighted Blankets with Social Impact? Yes, Please! We Experienced Instant Calmness with RestfulBlanket

I have a simple and repeatable evening routine that works so well. Instead of a routine that can feel forced such as journaling, yoga and counting sheep, we light candles, turn on some fairy lights and put on relaxing, gentle music from a playlist on Spotify called ‘Breathe’. These routines instantly soothe the body and help calm the mind. And you know what, I certainly know that it works when my five-year-old daughter drifts off to sleep in a matter of minutes. However, for someone that is constantly on the go, I may need some additional help to fall asleep as quickly as she does. Devices have been powered down, and I lay there super relaxed, listening to the music, feeling very cosy indeed, but can’t get my mind to completely turn off from work-related or parenting-related to-do’s and planning for the next day. So it surprises me that I’ve never thought about weighted blankets. I know this isn’t a new thing or anything but I’ve never tried it before. So when we came across RestfulBlanket, a Danish social enterprise creating natural, plastic-free weighted blankets and sensory calm products that help overwhelmed nervous systems feel held, I got curious and wanted to try one for myself. I’ve heard from family members, talking about how much they love their weighted blanket, so I wanted to see just how one blanket can help you relax and drift off to sleep and improve your snooze time.

The RestfulBlanket’s weighted blanket, weighted pillows and face mask arrived on our doorstep two weeks ago and I was very excited to try them (and have been hooked since!). Weighted blankets especially work so well to calm the mind and help with any anxiety because using them, it replicates that same safe feeling of being hugged or swaddled. The pressure from a weighted blanket help reduce levels of cortisol and instead increase the production of serotonin (your happy hormone) and melatonin (your sleep hormone). Not surprisingly then, this helps you relax and subequently drift off to sleep. And so it did for me.
Once I found just how much the RestfulBlanket’s weighted blanket (and oh, their weighted face mask is just dreamy too!) helped me relax- turning off those thoughts keeping me awake, and to start associating my bed with a cosy and relaxing place I couldn’t wait to return to after a busy day, we asked to speak with Zafir Bæk, the founder and owner of RestfulBlanket, and we had the pleasure of doing so.

Zafir told us that, what inspired the idea of RestfulBlanket was “a very selfish question, the kind that arrives at 3:17 in the morning when you are exhausted and your body still refuses sleep: what if there were something I could actually bear to sleep with, something that soothed my brain without asking me to become somebody else first?”
Zafir Bæk spoke openly about how she has spent years living with ADHD, long-term sleep problems and trauma, and simply couldn’t find a weighted blanket that felt right for her. “Too synthetic, too hot, too noisy, too clinical. I wanted deep pressure, but I wanted it in a language the body understands: breathability, quiet, natural materials, and a feeling closer to a held exhale than a medical contraption. That is where the first thread began.” She said.
The blankets from RestfulBlanket are medically certified, and we learned that they are especially designed for people with ADHD, PTSD, angst, stress, autism, sleep disturbance insomnia etc.

Not getting enough sleep doesn’t just affect how you feel and perform throughout the day. It will also affect your health and wellbeing in other aspects, such as you probably going to be too tired to work out, cook healthy meals and this will then come to affect your mood and energy levels. Insomnia and anxiety before falling asleep is very common in today’s always on-the-go culture. And a lack of sleep will make you feel groggy, irritable and you will lose effectiveness. So, not surprisingly, RestfulBlanket quickly had costumers coming to them who didn’t sleep so much or so well, wanting to try the weighted blanket that they’ve heard people deeply valued as a part of their evening routine.
“My customer is often someone who looks capable in daylight and quietly falls apart at bedtime.” Zafir said. “It is the woman with a mind full of tabs she cannot close. It is the parent of a child with ADHD, autism, anxiety or sensory overload who has tried everything and is tired in their bones. It is the person with stress, PTSD, restlessness or chronic poor sleep who does not want another quick fix, but something honest, physical and grounding. And it is also the values-led buyer who cares not only about better sleep, but about what their home is made of, how a product is produced, and what kind of business they are supporting.”

Zafir began building the idea of RestfulBlanket in 2019, long before it looked like a company, and formally launched the business in 2022. “In truth, RestfulBlanket existed in real life before it existed on paper. It was born in need first, and in business second.”
“I have always wanted to build a company that could produce in Denmark and create caring workplaces for people who do not fit neatly into boxes, because I believe every person has something valuable to contribute when they are given the right place and the right conditions.”
The blankets are sewn in their workshop in Vig, using soft and durable OEKO‑TEX® STANDARD 100 klasse I certified cotton and neutralised rapeseed filling rather than glass or plastic beads. “It may seem a little old-school, but that is part of what we value. Our products are made by people and from natural materials, with real hands measuring the rapeseed, real hands sewing, and real hands checking and packing each blanket with care.” Zafir said.
From the start of using their products, I immediately felt a sense of calmness wash over me. Their blanket and face mask feel like a gentle pressure, and when it comes to the blanket; on every inch of your body. Talking about the blanket and production, Zafir told us, “The rapeseed is treated at over 130°C for hygiene and durability, then distributed into carefully constructed chambers so the pressure lies evenly and quietly around the body. After sewing, each blanket is checked for weight, seams, finish and overall feel, because even the best materials mean very little if the blanket does not land softly on the nervous system.”
“We make products that feel genuine, thoughtful and caring, while still being scalable. They are made to be lived with, washed at 60°C, dried, used again, and trusted on the hard nights as much as the easy ones.”
Zafir further explained, “We are not a trend-led wellness accessory pretending to be one. Our products are developed by people who actually use them. I have taken the frustrations and limitations I have experienced in my own life, and through my work in the disability field, and used them to create weighted products that are not just designed to make sense on paper or in a white coat. They are designed to work in real life.”
RestfulBlanket make natural weighted blankets that are quiet, breathable, plastic-free, washable and genuinely beautiful to live with, while also taking safety, guidance and nervous system reality seriously. This is something we particularly love about the brand. And it’s impressive! “Our products are CE-marked Class I, made in Denmark, and shaped as much by lived experience as by materials science. And because RestfulBlanket is a social enterprise, every blanket also carries a second story: the story of meaningful work, dignity and care rippling outward.” Zafir said.
“The first thing many people notice is not sleep actually, it is relief.” Zafir told us when discussing the benefits people have mentioned from using RestfulBlanket. “The body stops negotiating with itself quite so loudly. Customers often describe the feeling as a calm, grounded embrace, and many tell us they fall asleep faster, wake less, feel less restless, and find it easier to come down from sensory or emotional overload.
“Beyond that, our weighted blankets are designed to be practical in real life: quieter than bead-filled alternatives, cooler and more breathable, kind to sensitive skin, and washable enough for families, children, pets, fever nights and actual human living. We cannot promise magic, but we can make something honest that helps the body remember what calm feels like.”
In a world that values hustle and climbing the corporate ladder, it’s more important than ever to truly value rest. Just like our bodies need to rest after excerise, our mind and our body both need recovery after each day, to show up refreshed and re-energised the next morning. According to Zafir, “People do not buy calm because you describe it well. They buy it when they feel understood.”
“In the beginning, it is easy to think a business is built on products, features, margins and efficiency. And yes, those things matter. But in a space like sleep, anxiety and sensory overwhelm, what matters even more is truth. If your words are prettier than your product, people know. If your marketing is louder than your integrity, people know.” Zafir’s biggest lesson has been to build slowly enough that trust can keep up.
“I have also always dreamed of creating something that could genuinely help people, in a way that is not only about money. We are able to do that now, for example through our Medusa Project, where we raise funds so that women affected by violence and staying in crisis centres can receive one of our weighted blankets as a physical anchor in their rehabilitation. Not as a loan, but as something we can provide them with; delivering blankets to people in crisis, to begin their new life with.”
And perhaps that is what makes it feel like the greatest accomplishment of all for Zafir. “Throughout RestfulBlanket’s journey, I was told by business advisers that there is no business in employing “vulnerable” people, and that you cannot build a real company if you also give products away to people in crisis. Now I get to prove the opposite. That matters to me more than any title or milestone ever could.”
Today, Zafir is a mother and a proud business owner who is very excited about the future. When asked what’s next for RestfulBlanket, she said: “Depth, not noise. The next step is helping more customers recognise what real quality, presence and knowledge actually mean, and why those things matter. We are expanding the universe around sleep, sensory calm and nervous system support, not by becoming louder, but by becoming more useful.”
“That means continuing to refine our weighted blankets and sensory products, growing our educational guides, and building thoughtful collaborations with therapists, retreats, care settings and professionals who understand that rest is not laziness, but regulation. At the same time, I want all three parts of RestfulBlanket to grow side by side and with equal strength: our commercial work, our caring production, and our social projects.
“RestfulBlanket may look like a textile company from the outside, but underneath it is really about people, accessibility, nervous systems and what it means to build something that genuinely helps.”
You can find Zafir and her team at Restfulblanket.dk, where you can explore their natural weighted blankets, browse the sleep and weighted blanket guides, and get a feel for the world behind the products. The team also have a real workshop in Vig, Denmark, and this is something that Zafir loves and treasures because she never wanted this to be one of those brands that feels polished and distant. “I want people to feel there are humans here.” She concludes.
