The Next Smart Home Essential: Why Electric Blinds Are the Fastest-Growing Upgrade

October 20, 2025

Smart homes have moved from a futuristic concept to everyday reality. Home upgrades that make life more connected and convenient are reshaping how people control lighting, heating, and security. Among the most in-demand additions are automated blinds, a market now worth £1.48 billion and projected to more than double to £3.9 billion by 2032, according to Persistence Market Research.

From the convenience of one-tap control to creating custom lighting scenes, we spoke with Nancy Whittington-Coates from Order Electric Blinds to discuss what is driving the surge in demand, and how homeowners can retrofit existing windows to bring smart comfort and style into their homes.

Several factors are driving the rise of electric blinds. Homeowners want convenience, and integration with voice assistants like Alexa and Google has made it easier than ever to automate daily routines. “The availability of retrofit-ready systems means people can upgrade existing windows without the need for complex installation.” Nancy Whittington-Coates says.

According to Nancy, the real appeal comes from how these blinds fit into everyday life. You can set them to lower automatically when the sun is at its strongest, helping to keep rooms cooler in summer. Light or temperature sensors can trigger adjustments throughout the day, while preset schedules let you wake up to morning sunlight or wind down with soft evening light. It combines comfort, energy efficiency and design in a way that feels natural.

For anyone thinking about making their home smarter, starting with window automation is an easy first step. Nancy tells us, “It’s affordable, non-intrusive, and instantly changes how a space feels. Even small upgrades like this can make a home more energy-efficient and enjoyable to live in.”

Tips for seamless integration of smart blinds:

  • Measure precisely: Use a steel tape measure and record all dimensions to the millimetre for the most accurate fit. Measure width and drop at multiple points (top, middle, bottom) and use the smallest measurement for inside-recess fits or the largest for outside-recess fits.
  • Choose the right power option: Electric blinds can be battery-powered, mains-powered, or solar-powered. Battery systems are ideal for easy retrofits, while mains power works well for new builds or full renovations.
  • Check compatibility: Make sure your blinds are compatible with your preferred smart home system, such as Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple Home, for seamless voice or app control.
  • Install sensors or timers: Add light or temperature sensors so blinds can adjust automatically throughout the day. Timers can help maintain privacy in the evenings or reduce heat during midday sun.
  • Start with one room: Try fitting smart blinds in a main living space or bedroom first. Once you’re comfortable with setup and control, expanding across the home is easy.

As more homeowners embrace connected living, electric blinds offer simple, practical ways to add comfort and control to any space.
