Experts Swear by This Scandinavian Sleep Hack
As Google searches for The Scandinavian Sleep Method soar, experts have revealed by they swear by it and explained how to crack the hack for a better night’s sleep.

The Scandinavian Sleep Method is gaining traction in households around the world, with searches up by over 180% this month on Google Trends, as couples look for simple ways to improve their rest, particularly as the weather begins to change.
The method, which involves sleeping with two single duvets on one bed, has long been the norm in Nordic countries, and sleep expert Michal Szlas, founder of hybrid mattress brand OTTY Sleep, says the technique may offer a surprising fix for restless nights here in the UK.
Why couples are ditching the shared duvet
“The Scandinavian Sleep Method might look unusual at first,” says Michal, “but it’s rooted in logic. Sharing a duvet often means one partner ends up too hot, too cold, or constantly tugging for coverage. These are all frequent disruptions to REM and deep sleep. Sleeping with separate duvets gives both individuals the freedom to regulate their own temperature, move without waking the other person, and enjoy more consistent, uninterrupted rest.”
Why separate duvets support better sleep
Michal explains how this method aligns with sleep science. “REM and deep sleep are the most restorative phases of sleep, but both require consistency. Any sudden temperature changes, disturbed breathing patterns, or interruptions from a restless partner can cause someone to drop out of these stages. While it may seem counterintuitive, not sharing a duvet can actually bring couples closer by ensuring they both get the rest they need to function well during the day.”
3 tips for trying the Scandinavian Sleep Method at home
Simple ways to try the trend without compromising on style or comfort:
1. Use two single duvets, not one double
The key to this method is giving each sleeper their own duvet. It sounds simple, but it eliminates one of the biggest causes of sleep disruption for couples – the battle over shared bedding.
“Choose a duvet weight and material that suits your own body temperature,” Michal says. “One person might prefer a warm, down-filled 10.5 tog, while the other may sleep cooler under a lightweight 4.5 tog. This method lets you personalise your sleep without sacrificing closeness.”
2. Try mattresses, not just duvets
“In other European countries, it’s also common to use two single mattresses pushed together on the same bed base, creating a king or super king bed with individualised support,” explains Michal.
This allows each person to select the right firmness level for their body. For example, one might need extra support for back pain, while the other prefers a softer feel. Michal goes on to explain why separate mattresses are also beneficial, as well as duvets. “As well as significantly reducing sleep disruption through motion transfer throughout the night, it is all too common to see partners with different firmness preferences for comfort, too. This approach creates a customised, pressure-free sleep environment while still keeping couples side by side.
“We’re increasingly seeing UK customers adopt this model, especially when shopping for guest rooms or master bedrooms where comfort is a top priority.”
3. Style it the Scandi way
Nordic homes typically style the bed with a large, lightweight bedspread over the two duvets to create a cohesive look. It’s a great way to blend function with a minimalist aesthetic.
With colder nights approaching, experts say now is the perfect time to try this low-effort, high-impact trend. As Michal adds, “There’s no single formula for perfect sleep, but the Scandinavian Sleep Method offers a simple, proven way for couples to improve their rest without needing to invest in an entirely new setup.”
