Why Teal Should be the Interior Colour on Your Radar

Why Teal Should be the Interior Colour on Your Radar

February 17, 2026

In 2026, we’re making room for colour, particularly teal.

Transformative teal was dubbed ‘colour of the year’ by WGSN and Coloro as a fluid, deep blue-green that represents a shift toward ecological responsibility, resilience, and digital-physical convergence. And it appears that the deep blue colour is making its way into interiors too, with Google searches for ‘teal rugs for living rooms’ up 160% YoY, while searches for ‘teal cushions’ are up 41% as more people look for ways to incorporate the bold shade into their home.

At first glance, teal may seem quite easy to incorporate in the home, but finding the right balance between making a statement and creating a warm and cosy space isn’t always easy.

Decide what colour combination you want to go for

Deciding what colour combination you want to go for when incorporating teal into your home is arguably the most important decision you’ll make. If you want to go for a dark and moody look in your space, use teal alongside a darker colour palette of dark brown or even charcoal for a cosy, cohesive look.

If you want a warmer, more grounded space, an earthy colour palette is the way to go. Think deep terracotta, warm browns and mustards. These colour combinations are great for bringing some life into a space without it feeling too maximalist or vibrant, so it’s perfect for living rooms and bedrooms.

Incorporate teal in unexpected ways

Instead of going all out with teal walls, incorporating the shade in other ways can often be a more versatile way to use it in your home.

A teal sofa makes a statement in an otherwise neutral space, while still giving you the freedom to layer in warmth and colour elsewhere. Think brown cushions or a fuchsia throw for contrast. Alternatively, you can let the sofa stand alone as the focal point, keeping the rest of the room calm and neutral if that better suits your style.

Other ways you can incorporate teal are through home accessories such as rugs and cushions. A teal rug can work as a focal point of the room in which you can build everything around, while teal pillows are great for bringing a pop of colour to beige or neutral sofas.

Channel art deco vibes with teal and metallic shades

Teal and metallics go together like bread and butter. The depth of teal gently grounds the shine, while metallic finishes bring in light and a refined touch. The pairing has its roots in Art Deco design, where rich colours were often balanced with brass, gold, and chrome for a look that felt considered rather than showy. These kinds of looks are timeless and bring sophistication to any space.
