Unveiling the Secrets to Finding the Perfect Lingerie Just in Time for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and many have turned their attention to underwear. ‘Lingerie’ has clocked up 432k UK Google searches in the last month, whilst ‘Sexy Lingerie’ searches have hit 97k. For those hunting for the perfect lingerie gift, there’s good news – almost half (46%) of women trust their partner over their best friend, Mum, or sister when it comes to buying lingerie. However, one-third (35%) are skeptical that their partner will get their size right. Almost half (47%) of men said they would shop in-store to buy lingerie as a gift for their partner this Valentine’s Day; choosing to seek help from bra experts to get the right present.
Ahead of Valentine’s Day this year, a store associate and lingerie expert at Victoria’s Secret has shared insider secrets with us on what styles are trending ahead of Valentine’s, as well as answering some of the most common questions from men shopping for lingerie.
Struggles with underwear sizing
Almost two in five (38%) men admit they would be clueless about their partner’s bra size, something store assistants often see around this time of year:
The Victoria’s Secret UK in-store expert says: “Men’s most commonly asked questions when shopping in our stores are usually around sizing and what size they should be buying for her. We’d suggest that men shopping for their partners should do their homework on sizes and lining level – padded or unpadded – preferences so we can get the perfect bra for her.
“Find her bra size by checking the labels in existing bras and other clothing to get an idea of her sizes for bras, knickers and sleepwear. It’s important to check a number of items, so we can see if there are any fluctuations in size for different styles. See what lining levels she likes, check her drawers and take note of how much coverage she likes – whether the styles are push-up (and have more padding) or unlined – as well as her knicker style choices.
“If you’re still not feeling confident about picking out lingerie and want to avoid any bra size blunders, consider gifting her some slinky nightwear. A satin chemise nightie, a babydoll or pair of satin pyjamas make a gorgeous gift. If you’re still not feeling confident, it can be a nice gesture to go shopping together and let her pick out what she likes – this way you’ll get a better idea for next time you’re gifting lingerie too.”
Lingerie preferences by gender

Men were most likely to buy a lace underwear set for their partner, although they’re not too adventurous when it comes to colour. Over half (52%) of men would be likely to pick red sets as their go-to colour for Valentine’s Day gifts.
“Some men are keen to understand the most popular products as many are happy to go with a best seller rather than trust their own instincts.
“For Valentine’s Day our male customers generally opt for red or black, with a ‘can’t go wrong with those’ attitude and often will shy away from pinks or bolder colours. Colours like pink or white tend to be purchased more by women shopping for themselves.
“Men will also choose more outwardly sexy options than women – such as lace, strappy or cutout options with thong or v-string matchbacks. If they are unsure of size they often will pick up sexy satin sleep or lace babydoll lingerie options – satin robes being particularly popular.”
Valentine’s Day favourites for women

Victoria’s Secret’s lingerie expert also shared what women are most likely to buy for themselves around Valentine’s Day, to offer an additional insight into the most coveted lingerie pieces:
“Women typically shop whatever they like regardless of the seasonal occasion. However we do see that women tend to buy more pink and red colours around Valentine’s Day, as a nod to the romance of the season.
“Unlined and balconette are the most popular styles at this particular time of the year and they’re always looking for the matchback to ensure a full matching set. Satin sleep pieces are also a firm favourite with female customers!”
