Sync Your Skincare Routine with Your Body’s Circadian Rhythm!

Sync Your Skincare Routine with Your Body’s Circadian Rhythm!

November 12, 2025

Now the clocks have gone back, our bodies are feeling the shift of darker evenings, slower mornings and a natural urge to hibernate. However, while you might be tempted to hit snooze until spring, this seasonal reset is actually the perfect time to realign your circadian rhythm, and your skincare routine along with it.

Your skin runs on its own 24-hour biological clock, cycling between protection during the day and regeneration at night. By syncing your skincare routine with these natural rhythms, you can maximise your products’ effectiveness and help your complexion look more rested, balanced and resilient even as daylight hours dwindle.

Your skin isn’t passive; it’s an active, intelligent organ that performs different functions during the day and night, synchronised with your body clock and thus your skin’s needs change depending on the time of day.

During daylight hours, the focus should be on defence, using antioxidants, moisturisers and SPF to protect against environmental aggressors. Your skin’s protective barrier is at its strongest to face the day. Sebum protection increases throughout the day to help lubricate and protect, the genes responsible for protecting against UV radiation and pollution are most active and the skin’s pH is slightly higher, making it less acidic.

At night, the skin switches into repair mode, so it’s the ideal time to use active ingredients that stimulate regeneration. Cell turnover skyrockets (up to three times faster than during the day) and this is when your skin works to fix the damage incurred from UV exposure and pollution and an increased blood flow delivers oxygen and nutrients needed for repair. Aligning your skincare with your circadian rhythm helps maintain barrier integrity, optimise hydration levels, and support the skin’s natural repair processes.

Lifestyle changes to support your skin’s clock include prioritising sleep, aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep, sleeping in darkness; even small amounts of light from devices can disrupt melatonin production which is linked to your skin’s repair cycle, maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, reducing exposure to blue light from phone and tables at least an hour before bedtime and finally eat for your clock; try to have your last meal a few hours before bedtime so as not to disrupt your body’s metabolic processes.

So, as we settle into shorter days, think of this as your skin’s seasonal reset:

Morning: Defend and hydrate with SOS Serum (Amazon, £17.49), the cooling, oil-free forsomula instantly soothes, calms and strengthens the skin barrier with Wasabi, Burdock and Peppermint extracts, helping protect against environmental stress and cold-weather irritation. Always follow with SPF to complete your morning defence.

Evening: Support overnight repair with SOS Night (Amazon, £18), a patented formula with three Bio-Active ingredients that work in sync with your skin’s sleep cycle. Enriched with Red Algae Sea Moss to plump, and Cranberry Extract as a gentle retinol alternative, it boosts cell renewal and moisture retention for smoother, more radiant skin by morning

SOS Tip: Keep SOS Serum on hand for reactive moments. It’s your go-to for calming flare-ups, dryness, or sensitivity caused by changing temperatures or central heating

When your skin and body clock are in sync, everything just works better. It’s a bit like watering a plant. When you do it when it’s most receptive, you see it thrive. It’s the same with setting your skincare to the same rhythm as your body, proof that beauty sleep really is science-backed.
