Bank Holiday Washout: How to Avoid Letting the Weather Ruin Your Easter Plans

Bank Holiday Washout: How to Avoid Letting the Weather Ruin Your Easter Plans

April 14, 2025

The Met Office forecasts wet weather for the Easter bank holiday weekend, including heavy rain, thunder, and strong winds. Travel experts offer tips on how to adapt your plans.

Recent reports show that more than half of Brits are planning to take a staycation in the UK in 2025, 10% more than in 2024. With the Easter bank holiday approaching, many are looking forward to a springtime staycation.

April weather in the UK has always been unpredictable. Historical data shows that the month can range from light showers to heavy downpours. For instance, last year was recorded as the wettest spring on record, and this year is no different. The Met Office predicts a shift to wetter conditions mid-month, with the potential for heavy rain, thunder, and strong winds in particularly the south and west.

Laura Miller, Group Head of Marketing at Away Resorts, advises us that despite forecasts of rain and occasional thunderstorms, there’s no need to change your staycation plans. Here are some ideas for enjoying top UK staycation spots indoors over the Easter bank holiday.

The Isle of Wight indoor experiences

Rain doesn’t stop the Isle of Wight from offering exciting indoor experiences. Visit the Dinosaur Isle Museum, which is perfect for kids fascinated by fossils and prehistoric creatures.

For a more relaxing experience, the Isle of Wight Steam Railway offers cozy, covered train rides through the countryside, ideal for a rainy day.

Cornwall for culture and cafés

When the weather turns in Cornwall, there’s still plenty to explore. The Eden Project’s iconic biomes house exotic plants, art, and cafés, offering an educational and creative retreat.

Cornwall holiday parks also feature spas, arcades, and family-friendly restaurants, ensuring entertainment no matter the weather.

Yorkshire’s family-friendly indoor attractions

Rainy days in Yorkshire offer a chance to enjoy its cultural and family-friendly indoor attractions. The Jorvik Viking Centre in York brings Viking history to life with interactive exhibits, while the National Railway Museum is a hit with all ages.

Yorkshire offers a variety of charming cottage holiday options, many of which feature indoor pools, providing the ideal way to relax and unwind after a day of exploring indoor attractions.

For those visiting other parts of the UK, rainy weather is perfect for exploring museums and galleries, enjoying a cosy afternoon tea, or visiting indoor adventure parks and soft play centres. You can also try local workshops like pottery or baking, and embrace indoor activities like board games, puzzles, or a movie night for a relaxing retreat.

Laura Miller, Group Head of Marketing at Away Resorts, says: “April weather in the UK has always been unpredictable, and Easter weekend is no exception. For instance, April 2024 saw a heavy 111.4mm of rainfall, while 2023 recorded 73.4mm.

“Despite the uncertainty of the weather, UK staycations are all about embracing adaptability and adventure. Rain should never dampen your spirits, it offers an opportunity for new discoveries, quality family time, and exploring different aspects of your destination.

“Whether it’s light showers or heavy downpours, the key is to focus on making memories, not worrying about the forecast. So, don’t cancel your staycation plans this Easter bank holiday weekend; embrace the weather, pack your raincoat, and let the adventure unfold.”
