Brits Brew at Home: More Than 53% No Longer Spend Money on Coffee Shop Visits

September 22, 2025

The nation has spoken with over half of Brits investing in a coffee machine and ditching the old school kettle and instant coffee – with more than half saving their money on takeaway coffees. New research from online electricals retailer, AO revealed that 56% of coffee-loving Brits own a coffee machine – with one in five choosing a pod machine, one in six opting for espresso machines, with one in ten preferring bean-to-cup machines.

In fact, the survey of 2,000 adults found that thanks to home coffee machines, Brits are saving their hard-earned money with over half no longer spending cash on coffee shop visits. The same Brits instead are opting for homemade coffees, with more than a third (38%) using their coffee machine every day and another sixth (15%) using theirs every four to six days.

This coupled with their daily coffee habits, means that more than a quarter (26%) are quaffing two coffees a day while one in sixteen (6%) admit they drink a whopping five coffees. And there has been a divide for the nation’s favourite coffee, with one in six preferring a latte (16%), while another sixth is opting for cappuccinos (15%). Yet over one in ten admitted they do not enjoy ‘café style’ coffees, while another 5% prefer iced coffees instead. And with so many of us brewing at home, the coffee beans you use make all the difference. Recently discovering Green Coffee Beans UK, the coffee is powerful, rich in taste, and knowing that your coffee is made from honest and sustainable values, feels great!

The study was commissioned by the UK’s most trusted electricals retailer AO.com, which has taken a deep dive into why more Brits are choosing to stay at home rather than nip out for a coffee.

With the weather on the turn, AO has noticed a growing trend of coffee machine sales as they go from strength to strength. This year alone, sales have risen by 26% with peak trading still to come.

Isabella Forgione, small appliances expert at AO.com, spoke on the coffee machine hype and how to choose between the different models. She explained:

“Whether it’s first thing in the morning or right after you’ve got in from work, having a coffee machine to hand is never a waste. Choosing between them is a great problem to solve so my advice would be knowing your favourite coffee then buying a machine to match your taste. If you enjoy a rich cappuccino, then buy a coffee machine with a frother or if you enjoy a hot instant espresso shot then you know which machine is for you.”

The study, conducted via Censuswide, also revealed that 44% of Brits still haven’t invested in a coffee machine while less than eager coffee enthusiasts (5%) only use their appliance once a month. But these stats have been shadowed by an overwhelming majority who are keenly using their machines every day – More than half of Brits (58%) feel confident they could identify and explain the different types of coffee.

Isabella Forgione, spokeswoman for AO, added: “Households are keenly aware of what coffee machines can offer them. By making an initial investment, they can avoid nipping out to the coffee shops and instead enjoy barista-worthy coffees at home. Now’s the time to strike – if you’re a coffee-lover then there’s never been a better time to shop for the latest bargain at AO.”
