Interior Expert Reveals How to Decorate and Organise Your Home for Christmas

November 27, 2025

For many, Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, but it can also be the most stressful. From untangling fairy lights to figuring out the perfect décor, festive planning seems to arrive earlier every year. In fact, UK searches for ‘how to decorate your home for Christmas’ have risen more than 5,000% in the past 30 days, highlighting just how early festive planning now begins.

To help you stay organised and stress-free, here are practical tips to make decorating easier, tips that I share together with CEWE, to reduce last-minute stress and simplify next year’s prep.

Tips on how to decorate the home for Christmas:

Create a focal point in each room:

Don’t like decorating, and always feel like you don’t do it well? Then make it simpler, choose one lovely decoration for each room and make that the focal piece.

Single focal points work well because they naturally draw the eye and create balance, making spaces feel more welcoming rather than cluttered. Place them where the eye lands as soon as you enter the room, such as the fireplace, dining table or front door. This will help the Christmas theme to be front and centre, no matter how little décor there is in that space.

In my home, I have a tree in our kitchen and dining area, a wreath over the fireplace in the lounge, and a few small accessories in the hallway and family room. This allows or maximum impact without overwhelming the space.

Use lighting to transform the mood:

When we think of Christmas, we picture dark nights and twinkly lights. That’s because soft lighting instantly evokes a relaxed, festive feel.

Candles, fairy lights, and dimmers are great for creating a warm glow indoors. Outdoors, adding lights to trees or bushes can transform your home’s entrance from cold to welcoming.

Swap textures and accents for festive touches:

To create a festive atmosphere without adding clutter, swap everyday items for seasonal alternatives. For example, switch cushions, throws or mugs or Christmas-coloured versions, or swap cotton for chunky wool and velvet.

Textures like knits, tartan, velvet and wool instantly add a feeling of cosiness. Even small touches, such as scented candles, festive artwork or Christmas-coloured towels in the bathroom make a big difference.

Choose a colour scheme and stick to it:

I advise choosing a colour palette for the whole house, whether it’s traditional (red and green), modern (bright multi-coloured) or wintery (white and silver). This keeps everything cohesive and avoids a mismatched look.

Christmas is synonymous with greens, reds, golds, silver and white, so even small nods to these colours will add a festive feel.

Avoid mismatching décor:

A common mistake is mixing too many styles. Whatever your theme, keep it consistent throughout the house to make it feel put together.

When it comes to décor, less is often more. Unless you’re going for a full ‘winter wonderland’ effect, it’s usually better to keep it cohesive and simple.

Tips on how to organise the home for Christmas:

Start a Christmas planner:

I recommend starting a Christmas folder with weekly tasks, so everything feels more manageable. Include lists, for cards, gifts, decorations and photos of how you decorated last year. This way you can see what worked, what didn’t, and avoid rethinking it all from scratch.

Make a home plan and shopping list:

Create a home plan that covers everything you’ll need for your festive plans, whether it’s decorations, guest essentials or party supplies. Add missing items straight to a shopping list.

Getting organised early prevents that constant ‘mental to do list’ that makes it hard to relax.

Declutter before December:

I always declutter in November, so the house doesn’t feel overstuffed when the inevitable extras arrive at Christmas. It clears space, simplifies your home, and gives you a lighter start to the new year.

Deep clean at the start of December:

Give the house a thorough clean at the start of December. It’s your last chance before things get busy, and it means you’ll only need light touch-ups before guests arrive.

Prepare guest bedrooms in advance:

Make up all guest bedrooms a couple of weeks before Christmas, including towels and toiletries. That way, all you need to do is a quick refresh before visitors arrive.

After Christmas:

Update your planner for next year:

Note down anything you’ll need to replace or add for next Christmas, whether it’s a broken decoration or something you missed this year. These reminders will make planning easier and stop you forgetting.

Make the most of January sales:

Sales are the perfect time to stock up on décor, wrapping and cards at a fraction fo the price. If you’ve kept a list and you have the storage space, it’s a great way to save money and feel ahead of the game.
