Michelle Williams Opened Up About Her Depression and We Applaud Her

Just because you are famous and beautiful and good friends with Beyonce, it doesn’t mean you can’t be impacted by something like depression. Destiny’s Child singer Michelle Williams has been a mental health advocate for years and this week she shared a message on social media about her own struggles. Williams recently checked herself into a facility in LA and this is the statement she chose to share.

“For years I have dedicated myself to increasing awareness of mental health and empowering people to recognise when it’s time to seek help, support and guidance from those that love and care for your well-being,” she wrote in a post that she shared on Twitter and Instagram. “I recently listened to the same advice I have given to thousands around the world and sought help from a great team of health care professionals. Today I proudly, happily, and healthily stand here as someone who will continue to always lead by example as I tirelessly advocate for the betterment of those in need.”

Williams has tried to lift the stigma around mental health and this is part of it. She is speaking out about her own struggles to let people know they are not alone. According to the World Health Organization, 300 million people around the world have depression and 6.7 percent of all adults in the country have experienced a major depressive episode in the past year. So many people go through this and they need support. Perhaps Missy Elliott put it best:
