7 Biggest Mistakes People Make When Buying an Engagement Ring
With Black Friday fast approaching, many couples are tempted to take advantage of the discounts when shopping for an engagement ring. But jewellery experts warn that rushing a decision could lead to disappointment later. Neil Dutta, Managing Director at jeweller Angelic Diamonds, explains that while the sale season can offer genuine value, it’s also when shoppers are most likely to make avoidable mistakes. From prioritising size over quality to overlooking how a ring will fit into everyday life, Neil shares the expert guidance buyers need before clicking ‘add to basket’.

1. Rushing the decision for the sake of a discount
Neil says, “Black Friday is brilliant for tech or homeware, but an engagement ring isn’t an impulse buy. It’s something that should last a lifetime, not just a season. People sometimes rush into a purchase because the discount looks too good to miss, but the biggest mistake you can make is letting urgency override thoughtfulness. Take time to read the specifications, check the craftsmanship, and understand what you’re actually buying. You’ll never regret that extra bit of care.”
2. Believing a bigger diamond automatically looks better
“Carat weight is easy to compare, which is why people focus on it, but it’s not what makes a diamond beautiful.” Neil says. “The cut determines how much light is reflected and how much sparkle you see. A well-cut 0.70-carat stone can look brighter and more eye-catching than a dull one-carat diamond. If your budget is set, it’s better to choose a smaller stone with an excellent cut and good clarity than a larger one that lacks life.”
3. Ignoring the wearer’s everyday life
“Before you buy, think about how the ring will fit into everyday life.” Neil recommends. “Someone who’s active or works with their hands will find a low-profile or smooth setting far more practical than a tall, delicate design. A ring should feel comfortable, not precious or fragile. The goal is something that’s worn daily, not saved for special occasions because it catches or snags.”
4. Overlooking how shape and setting affect appearence
“The shape of a diamond has a huge effect on how it looks on the hand. Ovals, marquise, and pear cuts tend to appear larger for their carat weight, while round diamonds have a more classic symmetry.” Neil explains. “A narrow band or a halo of smaller stones can make the centre diamond appear more substantial, which is a clever way to maximise your budget. It’s design, not just diamond size, that determines the overall impact.”
5. Assuming every discount means real value
Neil says, “Some shoppers see a large discount and assume they’re getting a bargain, but it’s not always that simple. Sometimes sale pieces are older designs or lower colour grades. Always look for certification and make sure you’re clear on what the discount actually applies to. True value is about longevity and quality, not just the price tag. If it’s a well-made ring, it will still feel like a bargain ten years from now.”
6. Forgetting about long-term care
Neil recommends that it’s worth thinking ahead to the long term. Rings can usually be resized, but intricate designs or pavé bands can make that more complex. Over time, claws might need re-tipping or stones re-polishing. “Choosing a jeweller who offers professional care makes a big difference. It means you can keep the ring looking exactly as it did on day one.”
7. Thinking bespoke means out of budget
Finally Neil tells YCB, “Custom design isn’t reserved for luxury budgets. Many jewellers let you select your diamond and setting separately, which allows you to tailor every detail without overspending. During Black Friday, you can often stretch your budget further, perhaps upgrading the metal or choosing a unique setting. A bespoke ring feels more personal, and that emotional connection lasts far longer than any discount.”
