Why Halloween Hits Singles the Hardest — And How to Reclaim it for Yourself

October 21, 2025

Have you ever thought that a harmless trick-or-treating knock could bring someone to tears?

A new survey from Dating.com reveals that for 59% of singles, Halloween is one of the most emotionally difficult holidays of the year. 58% even admit it can feel worse than Valentine’s Day. Watching couples in matching costumes or families trick-or-treating can sting, not because you don’t wish them joy, but because it highlights what’s missing from your own night.

But loneliness doesn’t have to take center stage. Holidays like Halloween amplify what we crave: real human connection. When you’re single, that craving can feel especially sharp. Luckily, there are meaningful ways to soothe it.

1. Log off the “highlight reel”

73% of singles report social media makes their Halloween loneliness worse. Well, this is your sign to step away from the scroll for the night. We all know that online feed is a highlight reel. However, it’s almost impossible to keep that in mind while scrolling through the pictures of happy people in matching costumes. For Halloween night this year, try a comfort ritual instead: light a candle, order your favorite takeout, and watch a nostalgic movie marathon.

2. Be someone’s “good spirit”

Seeing families trick–or–treat feels lonely (79% of singles admit that, and 59% have even cried seeing families at their door). When you feel down, shifting your focus outward can be surprisingly healing. Offer to help a neighbor hand out candy, volunteer at a community event, or drop treats off for a friend’s kids. You don’t need to be surrounded by people you know very well to feel connected. Sometimes, being the reason someone else smiles is enough to lift your own mood. Acts of kindness create genuine connection, the kind that likes and followers can’t touch.

3. Try a “reverse trick-or-treat”

If you’re already feeling lonely, try to flip the script. Instead of waiting for the world to knock on your door, make the first move. Send funny Halloween memes, surprise a friend with candy at their desk, and if you feel like it, join a community event. Little gestures remind you that you’re part of a web of people who care.

Halloween doesn’t have to haunt your heart. Step out of the comparison trap and create some magic.
