Embracing Winter: Make the Cosy Season Your Happiest Yet

As the nights grow longer and temperatures dip, now is the time to embrace the colder months as a chance to reset and reconnect. A time to slow down, soften the pace, and make home feel like a warm embrace. From ambient lighting and comforting rituals to a mindset that celebrates stillness, here are my favourite ways to romanticise the darker nights and find joy in the cosy season.
1. Create a “home cocoon.”
I love the cosy season — it’s my time to turn our home into a cocoon. As soon as the darker evenings roll in, I update the lighting, buy new candles and throws, and shift the whole energy of our space into comfort mode.
2. Change into your “home clothes” immediately.
Everyone in my family gets changed into their comfies the second we walk through the door. It’s our unspoken rule that the house is a place to fully relax — no jeans, no work clothes, just warmth and softness.
3. Add pockets of glow everywhere.
I’m obsessed with soft, ambient light. I use battery-powered lamps and little glow lights on shelves and side tables to create a HYGGE feel — it’s such an easy way to make the room feel warm and calm without harsh overhead lighting.
4. Keep warmth on standby.
There’s always a heated blanket plugged in and ready to go, and candles burning somewhere in the background. The mix of warmth and scent makes everything feel instantly grounding.
5. Romanticise the darkness.
Rather than resisting this time of year, I see it as a beautiful invitation to come inward — to rest, reflect, and reconnect. The darker nights remind me to slow down, appreciate home life, and fill our space with love and light.
6. Make your space feel light, not cluttered.
Because we spend more time indoors during the darker months, I find it’s so important to keep my space clear and calm. When it’s dark outside, clutter can make you feel closed in — but a tidy, peaceful space feels cosy rather than chaotic. I love creating a home I’m genuinely excited to come back to at the end of the day.
7. Celebrate the season through food.
Colder months always mean more home-cooked meals for us. We eat outdoors a lot in summer, so winter becomes all about slow, comforting dishes — stews, soups, and Sunday roasts — always accompanied by candles and good music. It’s long walks, rosy cheeks, and something delicious bubbling away on the hob.
