Over the last few years, the value of practising mindfulness has been increasingly understood. Mindfulness focuses on tuning in to the present moment. This can be through focussing on bodily sensations, thoughts and feelings, or by engaging in an activity that focuses the mind intensely on the present moment, thus shutting out the noise of thoughts of the past or imaginings of the future.

On the physical front, mindfulness has a range of benefits. It can help to lower blood pressure, treat heart disease, reduce chronic pain, and alleviate gastrointestinal difficulties.

Ways to be more mindful

There are various ways that one can attempt to become more mindful. Meditation can be a highly effective method of learning to focus on the present and is practised around the world. Fitness activities such as yoga and thai chi can also deliver many of the benefits of mindfulness, as well as being beneficial to the body and mind in other ways.
