From Pitch to Pub: 3 Ways to Style Football Shirts This Summer

Sports shirts have moved far beyond the football pitch, and whether you’ve just watched your team lift a trophy or are anxiously awaiting the start of the World Cup, they’ve officially become a summer staple.
Increasingly, they’re being worn as fashion pieces rather than just match-day kit, with even game-day looks leaning more style-led as sport and fashion continue to intersect. If you struggle to style these kinds of shirts or are looking for more fashion-forward ways to do so, look no further. River Island Senior Stylist, Chloe Robbins, show us three different ways to style one.
1. The Feminine Twist
Chloe Robbins tells YCB: “For this look, I wanted to balance sporty elements with pieces that feel polished, feminine and fashion-forward – and an easy way to do this is throguh layering. I chose trackpants and a shirt from the River Island x PONY collection, which look great together. For anyone who doesn’t want to wear such a cropped style, you can layer with a longer-line asymmetrical lace cami like this one. It adds a feminine twist to the sporty look and is further elevated with statement sunglasses and chunky trainers (also from the collection).”

2. The One with the Styling Hack
“OK, so not everyone likes the oversized look on their top half, and this styling hack is the way to make your sports shirt more ‘you’.
“Take the bottom edge of the shirt, twist it, tie it up with an elastic hairband, then tuck it inside. It works on either side, at the front or at the back.
“I styled this shirt from the River Island x PONY collection with double denim to make it super wearable. We’re loving a big turn-up on a jean at the moment, and don’t be afraid to try sizing up your jeans to get this kind of baggy look. For accessories, I chose an animal-print sneakerina, as love the contrast between that print and the print of the shirt.” Chloe continues.

3. The Glam Girl
Chloe says, “For a more glam approach, style your oversized sport shirt with fitted capris and kitten heels. A simple corner tuck of the shirt into your waistband can add just enough shape while keeping the relaxed vibe intact. It’s a casually confident way of styling a football shirt, and it’s perfect for a night out cheering on your team!”
