6 ways to stay chic when it’s frickin’ cold out

It is one of the most fashionable times of the year as New York Fashion Week kicked off on Thursday, but unfortunately it is also one of the coldest. New Yorkers were facing temperatures in the single digits this weekend with wind chills below zero. How is one expected to stay ultra chic in this kind of weather? Well, there are a few ways and we’ll share them with you (before you blow away.)

1. It’s all about the coat

Yes, you still have to wear a coat but coats can be major fashion statements in themselves, even the puffer ones. Heck, Canada Goose coats are dominating the luxury market.

2. Work with your coat

Now once you’ve picked out a coat make it yours. Everyone knows truly fashionable people don’t put their arms through the sleeves. But actually, this season, wearing your coat (especially a taux fur one) in a slouchy style that exposed your shoulder is the new and only way to wear it if you are a truly fashionable person. 3. Pop of colour

It is the doldrums of winter which means everyone is in black and gray. Be different! You wear pink! Or neon yellow! It will cheer up everyone around you and make you stand out. Check out these looks from Grace & Oliver. The pairing of rose quartz (Pantone’s colour of the year) and yellow is being seen all over NYFW this year.

4. Create a long sleek line

Going for all black is always a win at NYFW. You just can’t go wrong with it. Try adding these high point boots from ZOOSHOO or a spiked heel booty to give it an extra kick as well.

5. Scarf it up

Scarves have taken on a life of their own in recent years, and we love this one from Kate Spade, with the resurgence of the blanket scarves but why not tie one around your head?

6. Accessorise

It’s all about those accessories. Have some fun with your headwear this winter, with festive furry ear muffs or a wool hat with pom pom. The bigger the pom pom the better this season it seems. Or some great Rag & Bone gloves.

All of these will help you stay warm but everyone knows truly hard core fashionistas will still bare quite a bit of skin (like Hilary Duff) all for the sake of fashion. Polar vortex, solar schmortex. This is New York Fashion Week!
