Our Latest Designer Crush: Judy Wu

Our latest designer crush: Judy Wu

Judy Wu - London designer

We may be buried under layers of knitwear in the dire current climate but Judy Wu’s SS14 collection, whimsically inspired by the delicate porcelain town in “The Wizard of OZ”, has us already planning our spring wardrobes.

A refreshing palette of nude, white, blues & reds with a bold geometrical print running through, the collection is exempt from the usual spring stalwarts of florals & sugared almond shades. Instead we are presented with structural pattern cutting with the finest fabrics resulting in a luxurious, modern line that toes the thin line between inspired design and wearable garments.

Judy Wu Spring/Summer 2014 Collection

The aesthetic is decidedly non-conformist; the dresses are all elegant, the prints playful and the shirts & trousers beautifully tailored. Not overtly feminine or androgynous, Wu’s garments are rather a wonderful juxtaposition of intricacy & insouciance.

Based in London, Wu was raised in Shanghai but arrived in England in 2005 to study at the prestigious Central St Martins. After cutting her teeth as a pattern cutter at House of Holland and Jasmine De Milo her eponymous label was launched with an AW13 collection entitled “A Crack in Time”.

Using the rich landscape of Shanghai coupled with reflections of her inner self as a driving force Wu describes her signature as “a synthesis of modern Eastern energy with cutting edge Western design tradition to create standout inspirational fashion.”

Standouts from the SS14 collection include a white & blue printed jacket, perfect thrown over a dress on chilly spring mornings and the wide sleeved blouses, complete with crisp collars & delicate hand-made ceramic beading. Wu’s pattern cutting credentials are clear; there is soft draping, exquisitely cut shirts and sculptured jackets in a tandem of luxurious, contrasting fabrics. Perfect attire for a new season and most definitely worth waiting for.
