This One Morning Trend is Going Viral for Making Your Skin Instantly Brighter

There’s a new skincare obsession people are raving about on social media: the “morning shed” trend. The ritual involves applying multiple overnight beauty tools and treatments, then peeling them all off in one satisfying reveal come sunrise. Videos of creators removing chin straps, under-eye masks, hydrocolloid patches, and lip treatments have captivated millions, promising smoother, brighter skin by breakfast time.
Vogue’s Beauty Business Tracker recently listed “morning shed” as the number one trending beauty term, with 1,480 monthly searches in the week ending November 28th, a 223% increase from the previous year. On TikTok alone, the trend has racked up over 96 million views.
Dr. Kevin Hayavi, Medical Director and Managing Partner at Beverly Hills Physicians, explains why this trend is exploding and how it taps into our increasing fascination with stacked, intensive routines that claim to deliver visible results overnight.
“The morning shed phenomenon speaks to two things people want right now: instant gratification and visible transformation,” says Dr. Hayavi. “It combines the satisfaction of a multi-step routine with the drama of a reveal, which makes it perfect for social media. But there’s actually some science behind why people see results, even if they’re temporary.”
How Morning Shed Routines Work
The morning shed routine is all about layering. Before bed, people apply a combination of overnight treatments: hydrocolloid patches to target blemishes, retinoid wraps to smooth fine lines, under-eye masks to tackle dark circles, LED patches to stimulate collagen, and slugging layers (thick occlusive products like petroleum jelly) to lock everything in. The next morning, they remove each product one by one to reveal skin that appears smoother, plumper, and brighter.
“When you wake up and remove all these treatments, you’re seeing the combined effect of multiple products working together,” explains Dr. Hayavi. “Hydration gets sealed in overnight, puffiness decreases as you sleep elevated, and active ingredients have hours to penetrate the skin. The ‘reveal’ moment is visually dramatic because you’re literally peeling away layers to show refreshed skin underneath.”
The Psychology Behind the Trend
There’s a reason the morning shed has become TikTok gold. The trend checks every box for viral content: it’s visually satisfying, offers instant results, and fits perfectly into the platform’s culture of dramatic transformations.
“People love the ritual aspect,” says Dr. Hayavi. “There’s something almost meditative about carefully applying each product at night, then peeling everything off in the morning. It feels like unwrapping a gift you gave yourself.”
The trend also taps into our desire for control and self-improvement. In a world where so much feels uncertain, taking charge of your appearance through an elaborate routine can feel empowering. The fact that you can film the results and share them adds another layer of appeal.
But the psychology goes deeper. Morning shed videos often show dramatic differences between ‘before’ (face covered in products) and ‘after’ (glowing, refreshed skin). This creates a compelling narrative arc in under 60 seconds, perfect for short-form video content.
The Reality: Benefits and Risks
While the morning shed can deliver real, visible results, it’s important to understand what’s actually happening to your skin. The brightness and plumpness you see in the mirror are often temporary effects of hydration and reduced inflammation, not permanent skin transformation.
“The good news is that many of these products do work,” notes Dr. Hayavi. “Overnight masks provide deep hydration. Retinoid treatments stimulate cell turnover. Eye patches reduce puffiness by delivering cooling serums to swollen tissue. When used correctly, these products can genuinely improve your skin’s appearance.”
The problem comes when people get overzealous. Stacking too many active ingredients, especially without understanding how they interact, can lead to irritation, redness, and breakouts. Retinoids and acids, for example, can be too harsh when combined. Using adhesive patches every single night can irritate skin over time.
“I’ve seen patients who got so excited about this trend that they went overboard,” says Dr. Hayavi. “They were using retinol, AHAs, BHAs, and multiple patches all at once, every night. Their skin became red, sensitive, and actually looked worse than before they started. Moderation matters.”
There’s also the risk of creating unrealistic expectations. The dramatic transformations shown on social media often involve perfect lighting, filters, and editing. Real results from skincare are more subtle and take consistent use over weeks or months to achieve.
“If you want to try the morning shed safely, start slow. Don’t jump into a 10-product routine on night one. Begin with two or three products and see how your skin responds. A simple routine might include a hydrating overnight mask, an under-eye patch, and a spot treatment where needed.” Dr Hayavi says.
“Pay attention to ingredient compatibility. Don’t combine multiple exfoliating acids or layer retinol with other strong actives unless you know your skin can handle it. If you’re new to active ingredients, introduce them one at a time, weeks apart.
“Listen to your skin. If you wake up with redness, stinging, or increased breakouts, you’re doing too much. Scale back immediately. The morning shed should leave your skin looking refreshed, not irritated.
“Finally, manage your expectations. These routines can absolutely boost brightness and reduce puffiness temporarily, but they’re not magic. Real skin transformation comes from consistent, appropriate care over time, not one viral routine.” Dr Hayavi concludes.
