How to Protect Your Skin in the Colder Weather, by a Skincare Expert
The cold has really taken a turn, and with that being said, many of us have absolutely no idea on how to protect our skin in the cold, wind and rain. Winter can wreak havoc on your skin, leaving it dry, flaky, tight, and dull. If you’re experiencing these issues, there’s a good chance your skin barrier has been compromised. As a K-beauty skin expert and Founder of Skin Cupid, here are my personal tips for adjusting your skincare routine as colder weather sets in this winter season.

1. Double down on hydration
Cold air and central heating can really dehydrate your skin, which in turn can weaken your skin barrier. That means that your skin is less effective at keeping moisture in, and irritants out. To combat this, you’ll want to add even more hydration into your routine. Look for toners, essences and serums with hydrating ingredients, like hyaluronic acid, polyglutamic acid, and ectoin. You might also need to switch out your current moisturiser for something richer – try formulas that contain ceramides, as these replenish the fatty acids that are essential components of the skin barrier.
For additional hydration around the home, use a humidifier indoors to ensure you’re combatting the dry air.
2. Don’t skip SPF just because there’s no sun!
UV rays can penetrate clouds and reflect off snow and ice, causing serious damage even in winter. Just because the weather isn’t as warm as it was a few weeks back, doesn’t mean you should neglect SPF.
Apply a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or above daily, especially on exposed areas such as your face and hands. Hands are often missed, but this is an area that could potentially age you significantly when older if you skimp on the SPF here. Layer this over your moisturiser for additional protection.
3. Gentle cleansing is key
Any harsh cleanser will strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving it tight and flaky. Opt instead for a sulfate-free, cream-based cleanser and wash this off with lukewarm water. Don’t use hot-hot water, as this can worsen dryness, and pat your skin dry rather than rubbing it.
4. Nourish from within
Your skin health starts internally, and because we tend to choose heavier meals in cold weather, winter diets often lack hydration and essential nutrients.
Drink plenty of water and make sure to incorporate omega-3-rich foods like salmon, walnuts, and chia seeds into your daily diet. These help maintain skin elasticity and reduce inflammation.
5. Protect against wind burn
The cold winds have already begun this season, and will likely get stronger. Cold winds, which lack the moisture of warmer air, can compromise the skin barrier, causing redness and irritation.
To protect against it, apply a protective balm or barrier cream before heading outdoors. You’ll also want to cover exposed skin with scarves, gloves and other elements to avoid any contact with harsh elements.
