Top Tips for Beating the Frizz During Summer Storms

June 17, 2025

The UK has been experiencing a spate of summer storms, with thunder and heavy rain combined with soaring temperatures was expected for the rest of last week. And with the heat comes muggy, humid weather.

For most of us, humidity is the root of hair evil when it comes to frizziness. High moisture in the air disrupts the hydrogen bonds in your hair, causing it to puff up and quickly turning a sleek style into a messy nightmare.

To combat this, here’s my three top tips for switching up your hair routine to avoid the dreaded frizz…

Don’t neglect your hair dryer

While it may sound counterintuitive, reaching for the hair dryer can actually help.

You should always make sure your hair is fully dry before heading out in humid weather since damp hair will soak up extra moisture and turn frizzy fast.

The controlled heat of a hair dryer can also help smooth the hair cuticle, sealing it off from humid air.

Just remember to always use a good heat protectant and opt for cooler settings to avoid heat damage.

Use deep conditioning treatments

It’s no secret that hair is more vulnerable to breakage when it’s frizzy thanks to being more brittle and likely to tangle, and this is all the truer with dry hair.

That’s why is so important to maintain your hair health with regular deep conditioning treatments and hair masks. Not only will these improve your hair’s appearance and texture but keeping your hair hydrated will also work to stave off frizz in the summer months.

Leave-in conditioners, oils and serums are your best friend in the summer months for keeping frizz at bay.

Don’t be scared of silicones

Anyone particularly susceptible to frizz, such as those with coarse, damaged or curly hair, may also want to turn to products that contain silicones.

While rightfully criticised for damaging hair with too much use, silicones can be a game-changer for frizz control, creating a smooth, moisture-resistant barrier.

Silicone sprays also work wonders on hair extensions by reducing tangling and static, extending their life and making styling easier. However, those with tape-in extensions should avoid silicones in shampoos, as they can weaken bonds and cause slippage.

If you do decide to switch to products with silicones, be sure to use a clarifying shampoo on your natural hair every couple of weeks to avoid product buildup.
