When life gives you lemons…how to turn a negative situation in to a positive

How to turn a negative situation into a positive

You hear it all the time: when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Inspirational on paper, it can often prove a little harder in reality. While the saying suggests having a can-do attitude in the face of adversity, sometimes you just need some sure-fire, practical advice to help you turn a negative situation into a positive. If you happen to be facing one of these bitter situations in your personal or professional life, don’t worry – we’ve got a way to help you make that lemonade…

1. You were phased out by your friend

‘Ghosting’ has been getting a lot of press recently. It seems instead of sitting down to talk over issues with a friend, we’d rather slowly but surely phase her out so not to create too much drama. It seems like the kindest thing to do. However, finding yourself on the receiving end can be just as heartbreaking as a relationship break up. Sometimes you don’t realise it’s happening until it’s too late. But if a friend has decided he or she wants out of your life, maybe it’s for the best. You’ll always have great memories to look back on but you don’t want to hang out with someone you know doesn’t want to be there. A friendship should be a two way thing, so don’t waste energy on them if they’re not prepared to do the same for you.

2. You didn’t get the promotion you wanted

Chances are, this will happen at some point in your career, but don’t stress. It’s more common than you think, especially when you’re just starting out at a company! Switch up your mindset: take this opportunity to examine the work you’re doing, meet with your boss, and come up with a strategy to get back in the game, better than ever. This’ll show initiative too, so you’re less likely to get passed over next time that promotion comes up. If you’re still feeling a let down, give yourself an energy boost with a big swig of White Dust Push lemonade before you knock on your boss’ door.

3. Your best friend moves away

Even as we get older, it’s still the worst when our friends move away. Friends are like our safety blankets in tough times, and it can be hard to get used to only seeing someone every couple of months if you’ve been used to being able to pop round at a moment’s notice. Turn those lemons in to lemonade by seeing the positives: this leaves more time to get closer to the other friends in your circle. They might introduce you to different experiences you never had time for before. Plus, having your BFF in a new, exciting place means you’ll just have to take an amazing trip to see her, right?

4. You bombed an interview for a new job

We all have days when absolutely nothing goes our way – hair won’t stay straight, knocked over the milk at breakfast, and cannot find the house keys anywhere. These days often occur when you know you’re meant to be on point. Of course, because you’re extra stressed you’re too frantic and are thus the opposite. If you know you were way too frazzled in the job interview that meant so much to you, don’t dwell on it. That won’t help. Take a deep breath and look back over your 20 minutes in that chair with an objective eye. How would you answer the question that flawed you next time? Often the reason we’re nervous is because the job means so much; how can you channel that passion positively?

5. You got stood up

It’s one of those things that you generally only see happen in movies. It’d never actually happen to me, we tell ourselves, laughing. However, if it does, laughing might well still be the best medicine. Take a leaf out of gal pal Taylor Swift’s books and just shake it off. Make a joke to the bar man rather than sheepishly hanging your head, order yourself a super sweet indulgent treat and start scanning the bar …there might be a lonely guy who’s life has given him lemons nearby!
