Cool Scandi-design we need in our home now!

Ross & Brown Home - 2

There’s something about the fall and winter time that leaves all of us at Your Coffee Break itching for some new inspiration. Maybe it’s the changing leaves and great fashion or the fact that the colder weather has us holed up inside our houses quite a bit more than usual. While we love turning to tried and true favourites like IKEA, this season we wanted to spice things up.

That’s why recently we’ve been turning to Ross & Brown Home for inspiration and new decoration ideas. With cool Scandi-designs, this online store offers everything from home interiors to gift ideas for the holidays. We talked with Peter and Gary of Ross & Brown Home to get advice on gift giving, home decorating and the best pieces to focus on when updating your space.

With so many accessories and pieces out there to choose from, where does one even begin when putting together a personal and aesthetically-pleasing home? Ross & Brown suggests starting with a sofa so that you have a good space to relax, listen to music, catch up on your favourite magazines and spend time with friends. Seeing as a sofa is the largest single item of furniture in your space, and somewhere where you’ll end up spending a lot of time, it’s the piece that sets the tone for the room.

Ross & Brown - dining table

Besides lounging, we can probably all agree that our favourite thing to do at home is eat. Nothing beats cooking with loved ones and sitting down to a great meal, or even whipping up a midday snack to munch on while you scan Instagram. More than just a good place to eat, a good dining table can serve as a workstation and an entertaining hub. The wooden base on this dining table would add an autumnal, rustic touch to any space. While it’s important, and basically necessary, to splurge on these big pieces, Ross & Brown suggests saving on pieces like crockery and glassware that will only get affected by constant wear and tear.

For those of you who already have your space set up in a way you love, it’s time to focus on the little changes you can make to bring your home into the new season. As the days get shorter and the nights get longer, it can be natural to want to keep harsh elements out and create a warm, safe environment for ourselves. For a quick and easy change, Ross & Brown suggest adding cushions and throws to your room, all in warm colours (think: dark reds, burnt oranges and toned-down neutrals). Another simple, and free, way to make a room feel new again? Move pictures and paintings around! “A picture or painting in the same place for too long becomes just wallpaper. Relocate it and it’s like having something new altogether,” says Peter.

Ross & Brown HomeIf you do find yourself with some extra cash to spend on decorations this season, Ross & Brown advise turning to metal. “We currently like to see our metals bare or raw, any indication of an item’s provenance is important.” This Copper and Black Table Lamp adds a modern, understated touch and let’s more light into a room. Another cute accessory for your desk would have to be this cork vase. With it’s smooth curves and dichotomy of textures, it’s original without being too in-your-face. “For me, this is what exemplifies the new contemporary Scandinavian look, clean lines, simple form but the use of cork as a secondary texture gives it some Nordic gravitas and anchors the whole piece,” says Gary.

Even though it’s only November, we’ve already started stressing about the best gifts to give our loved ones in the coming months. Since home items are so personal and customisable to one’s taste, we asked Ross & Brown their advice on the best present ideas. In terms of home decor, they suggest these Cognac and Whiskey Glasses by Normann Copenhagen or this rubber washing up bowl that also makes a great magazine rack. And for all the music-lovers out there, the MOVE, a Bluetooth speaker that looks great and sounds amazing. If you have any friends who’ve just moved into a new home, try to avoid gifting them more clutter and instead consider practical, usable gifts like teapots, trays, crockery and glassware. As long as you keep the pieces stylish and not too quirky, they will most likely be used, which any friend would appreciate.
